In 2010, we established Every Generation Gives (aka, the EGG Project) to introduce and promote philanthropy, social responsibility, and volunteerism among young students (aka, EGGsters) from traditionally low-income schools in Las Vegas. Since then, hundreds of EGGsters have granted $60,000 into local Las Vegas nonprofit organizations and changed countless lives.
We believe that all children should know they have the power to effect positive change. EGG puts students from low-income and at-risk schools in the driver's seat to make a difference in the world around them now--and in the future. Eggsters become the leaders of tomorrow, today.
Local nonprofit professionals present to EGGsters about their work and their agency. Teacher-introduced curriculum and peer-to-peer collaborations pick up where the presentations leave off. Students learn about the issues that affect their neighborhoods, their country, and the world. Then, they are asked how they will make a difference.
EGGsters become the experts, empowered to dig deeper, with empathy and critical thinking. Students research and innovate to address the real problems that local nonprofits face. They tackle real-life issues--like poverty, climate change, equity, and human rights--to enact real solutions.
Throughout the EGG Project, students learn about issues that dramatically affect people, locally and all over the world. They evaluate what it takes to make a positive change. There are no easy answers. EGGsters rise to the challenge, do the work, and make a difference. In the end, EGGsters vote to determine which project to fund.
In applying academic skills--writing and reading comprehension, critical thinking, researching & questioning, and presentation & public speaking, to name a few--in a real-life project students learn inherently by application. The learning takes on a deeper meaning; Common core meets common cause.
We aspired for EGG to make connections: nonprofits with their communities; education leaders with philanthropists and local businesses; and, most importantly, students with their learning and their ability to impact their world.
